The Politics of Life #failchat
For the past month, I’ve been hosting weekly chats on Twitter. They have nothing to do with HR. Each week, the audience tackles failure from a different angle. We’ve talked about “generalized failure disorder,” relationships and managing difficult people at work. The audience is expanding, and the person-to-person interaction is growing more fun and entertaining with each passing chat. This coming Monday, we’re going to talk about politics. Please, don’t run away from this. Yes, politics are awful to discuss. Twiter fights are brutal. You know that guy.

HR Tech World San Francisco
There’s another new HR technology conference on the scene. It’s called HR Tech World San Francisco. The company that organizes this event has a foothold in Europe. Now they’re coming to the states with a pretty stellar line-up of speakers and a desire to clean up the American HR technology conference market. You ask — “Aren’t there 600 HR technology conferences?” ” The answer is yes and no. Wait, technically, all of this is an infomercial to get you to spend some money. And, technically, none of this is HR technology. Hubris. almost had a stroke.

HR: A Love Story
I just spent the day learning how to tell better stories with Dr. Nick Morgan of Public Words. It’s amazing that I’ve gone this far in my career as a speaker with very limited training. I don’t know anything about the mechanics of building a great speech, and don’t get me started on my ability to perform. But, it turns out, I’m an okay mimic. I see what I like, and I copy from the best. If I could only start breathing properly and get my voice out of my throat, I would clean up in this market! Anyway, now I understand that there are five types of keynote speeches.

An EpiPen Saved My Life
An EpiPen saved my life on Saturday night. Well, it saved me a trip to the emergency room. have food allergies and ate something off my husband’s plate that caused an anaphylactic reaction. My lips began to tingle. My throat started to close. struggled to breathe, and my body attempted to throw up the food I just ate. It was gross and scary. The EpiPen, which is a medical device that administered epinephrine into my body , worked like a charm. I’m telling you this because food allergies are no joke. The kid had an allergic reaction to ice cream. Yeah, man. Neighbors. Worthless.

Generational Differences and HR Leadership Styles
My friend, Steve Browne , hates it when people descend into the “tarpit of generational discussions.” ” He’s right. There are too many generalizations and stereotypes that weigh down our meaningful discussions. But I’ve been blogging since February 2004, and I have at least two generations of readers who have been with me for my entire journey. And I’ve been with them through their career journeys, too. Some of my Gen X HR readers are now VPs. Generational differences are really just phases, right?). Your family is your family. They don’t feel loved.

#FailChat Preview: Week 2
We had a great #failchat on Monday about “Generalized Failure Disorder,” which was a fake name for being human. took a poll at the end of the chat, and this Monday’s topic will be “relationships.” ” I constantly fail at maintaining and nurturing my personal and professional relationships, and I hope we can have an honest and helpful conversation about why most of us suck at being good friends, neighbors and colleagues. And if you don’t know what a Twitter chat is, that’s okay. Or have a look at this summary to see how we had fun.

HR Tech Analysts #hrtechconf
I went to HR Tech, last week. It’s a conference where a bunch of HR technology companies showcase the latest and greatest iterations of their software. It’s also a place where people called “HR tech analysts” go behind the scenes in a “briefing room,” which is just a beige-on-taupe room that’s always too hot or too cold, and meet with technology companies. They usually tell them what’s wrong with their software. So, wait, let’s step back. What are HR tech analysts? Well, definitions vary widely. Those analysts may be independent. TBD.).

Active Waiting
Right now, I’m in a transition mode. I am moving from D-list HR blogger and speaker to the founder of a software company. And, if I’m honest with you, it’s uncomfortable. Everything is 100% harder than necessary. Unlike what you read on Breitbart, doors do not open because of affirmative action. Nobody is handing me a wad of cash and patting me on the back for being a woman who is interested in STEM. In fact, Machiavellian dudes who rule over “start-up culture” have created a model where you must struggle to be credible. F**k that! Such a failed model! Budgets.

Stop Calling People “Deplorables”
My politics are a little less than mainstream. I’m a pro-choice secular humanist, a vegetarian, and someone who believes in the right to protect myself and shoot a sexual predator in the face. vote Democratic because I like roads and schools, but it’s not like I’m all that impressed with the streets near my house or your kids who can’t do math. I’d like to pay less in taxes because most of my tax money is wasted on war and a federal food policy that kills animals and makes us sick. So even though #imwithher, I can’t call Trump supporters “deplorables.”

Are You a Strategic Optimist?
I’ve spent the past six months talking to HR and recruiting professionals about failure. Unfortunately, nobody cared about enterprise failure until I started talking about my life. My maternal grandmother was a strategic optimist. When she became accidentally pregnant at the age of 20, she married the guy and had four kids. When the guy was mean to her, she accepted it. When he cheated on her, she always took him back. She once told me, “I had no choice. Failure wasn’t an option.” ” Of course, failure is always an option. My Gramma was in denial.

Inaugural #FailChat on Monday: Generalized Failure Disorder
I’m launching the inaugural #failchat on Monday, October 17th at 1PM ET. Our topic? Generalized Failure Disorder. What the hell is Generalized Failure Disorder? It’s nothing. It’s fake. It’s being human. Data shows that most of us fail in the same ten ways over and over again, and we learn how to manage failure — or not — from our families and the important people in our lives. And psychologists regularly demonstrate that failure isn’t a big deal. Basically, failure is just part a boring part of life. You know, much like eating and pooping. failchat.

Work-Life Balance Matters to Childless Liberals, Too
I have a mean aunt who lives on the west coast. I’m not sure she would call herself mean, but she’s an elderly woman who is angry with me because I’m basically a worthless family member. And, you know, she’s right. When it comes to my family of origin, I don’t do much for the people who love me. Turns out that familial love is subjective, and, often, a one-way street.). I’ve been reading blog posts from my friends in the HR blogging and analyst community — and they are tremendous friends — but I’m disappointed. I used to be the Peyton Manning of the HR Technology Conference & Exposition. Well, okay, no. Peyton Manning has natural skills and abilities. He has raw talent. I was Peyton Manning in that I saw myself as the leader of a new generation of HR professionals who were embracing HR technology as an integral part of their jobs. Managing Expectations in HR and Beyond
I have a working theory that 92% of an HR leader’s job is managing expectations. People bring their issues to work. Whether it’s a stage-of-life problem or a money problem, nobody ever shows up to a job without their personality quirks. When those irregular characteristics manifest themselves in the form of conflict, HR is often asked to swoop in and provide counseling and comfort to workers who are disappointed in themselves and the world around them. HR knows the truth. Nobody gets rich or solves emotional problems from working. And they become 92% of HR’s concerns.

Billy Bush & NBC Are to Blame for Lochte and His Lies
I know everybody in America is mad at Ryan Lochte. Rightly so. He’s a fool and solely responsible for the lies that spewed from his lips. But I’m also annoyed by NBC’s coverage of the Rio Olympics. You know the lines between journalism and entertainment are blurred when Billy Bush — a cousin to George W. Learned Helplessness in HR
There is a weird phenomenon happening in human resources departments around the globe. Far too many people in HR are suffering from learned helplessness. Learned helplessness is a psychological condition that commonly describes victims of abuse and neglect. Those poor souls give up on themselves. They see themselves as perpetual victims — even when they’re not. Learned helplessness makes you feel like you have no control, so you give up trying. In many ways, it’s an extreme version of self-handicapping that stems from severe psychological trauma. think so. Or find a new job.

Thoughts on Leading a Lonely Life
I just finished The Lonely City: Adventures in the Art of Being Alone. The book chronicles the author’s experience with loneliness but also weaves in stories of art, AIDS, masculinity, feminism, sexual deviance, and the emergence of technology as a mechanism to overcome social isolation. Yeah, totally uplifting. But it was so superbly written that you forget you’re reading about pain, despair, and emotional disconnection. HR Failed the Women of Fox News
I’m not surprised by anything, anymore, but I am shocked by the number of women who have been allegedly harassed by Roger Ailes and other members of the Fox News executive team. Dozens have come forward. In HR, we have a rule of thumb when it comes to sexual harassment complaints: for every one victim, there are two who haven’t come forward. My social media diet failed. More specifically, I failed at giving up social media and watching the news for thirty days. June was a heartbreaker of a month. There Are No HR Heroes
If there’s an overused marketing trope in my industry, it’s the notion of HR heroes. Have you noticed the campaigns and advertisements? Companies celebrate human resources professionals who swoop in and save the day when you need something at work. Here’s the thing about HR heroes: They’re not heroes. My Employee Smells Like Weed
I can see why people still need HR. On a regular basis, I have people writing and asking about drugs. Mostly marijuana. Questions like, “My employee smells like weed. What can I do?” ” Part of me sympathizes with business owners and managers. It hardly seems fair that you have to show up to work sober while some other dude rolls into the office high. I’d love to smoke weed all day, too, but adulthood beckons. But another part of me is like, really, how do you know what this employee smells like? There are a lot of reasons why people might smell like marijuana.

2016 Iowa SHRM State Conference
I’m obsessed with the movie Cedar Rapids. Have you seen it? Tim Lippe has no idea what he’s in for when he’s sent to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to represent his company at an annual insurance convention, where he soon finds himself under the “guidance” of three convention veterans. This movie is an exact depiction of every HR conference I’ve ever attended since 2008. Insurance brokers in Iowa get crunk. Hijinx ensue. What’s not to love? Since watching the film, I’ve been laser focused on doing a conference in Cedar Rapids. swear to god, this is true.

I got a call from an HR technology vendor telling me that I’m in this month’s HR Magazine. Then he asked me to do a free webinar for him. Yeah, okay. must look new. So let’s back up. What is HR Magazine ? Well, it’s a monthly publication from SHRM , an HR association. And it’s terrible. This month’s edition is especially dreadful. There’s a cover photo of a woman from a much-admired company. She’s a VP of innovation, making her a shining example of a successful woman in the technology industry. Strategic. Technical. Approachable.

Failure Asks You to Take a Hike
Most of you know that I’m toiling away at a side project: a software company. It’s going slowly because I’m trying to be deliberate and diligent while also having fun and not taking myself too seriously. It’s amazing and horrible at the same time. Mostly amazing. Well, ask me how I feel in a few more weeks.). Whatever happens, though, this is my path. The timeline is mine. have a clear vision of what I would like to accomplish. I’m answering to nobody. Mimicry
My cats are all about monkey-see-monkey-do. Roxy observed how my cats liked to sit on our porch furniture. She went ahead and claimed a spot — just like the big kids. Roxy likes to poop at a particular time of day. Now Jake wants to poop at that same time. Emma uses the scratching post before she eats her noshes, and now Roxy does her nails before dinner. Molly loves treats, and so Roxy loves treats. Do those treats taste good? Who knows! It’s a constant cycle of écoute et répète in my life, and it’s delightful. promoted the hell out of the post. The Best HR Competency is Trustworthiness
The only HR competency that matters is trustworthiness. Go ahead and earn your SPHR and SHRM-SCP. Add it to a distinguished list of undergraduate and graduate degrees in areas that are directly related to the world of business. That’s fabulous. But when the chips are down, will you do the right thing? If you make a mistake, will you admit it and contain it? Do you let your neediness and desire for approval get in the way of normal business operations? Are you competitive when you should be collaborative? pick trustworthy people over overly confident (and competent) people all the time.

Last November, I went to Havana with a bunch of HR professionals. We had an excursion to the National Museum of Fine Arts , which houses an impressive collection of Cuban art. Working from Home Can Be Lonely
Working from home can be a lonely and isolating experience if you let it. Here are some ways to ensure you don’t go crazy. 1. Have some animals in your house. It’s easy to sit on your butt for 10 hours, but cats and dogs will bother you for food and attention. Animals force you to get up and away from the computer about 100 times an hour. 2. Talk to somebody new each day. There are periods of time when I only talk to my husband and my cats, which is unhealthy. I can feel my brain grow mushy. Keep the TV off. Eat lunch outside of your home when you can. Suckers! Get off the internet.

Working in HR Makes You Skeptical
I spent the first twelve years of my career working in recruiting and HR departments. Then I spent nine years writing and speaking about HR, recruiting and technology. Working in HR makes you skeptical, and the first part of my career made a formative impact on my worldview. Whenever I hear a story about anything — from cats to conspiracy theories — I’m a cynic and contrarian. I’ve been trained to question everything, which feeds into my natural tendency to be a “pretend police officer.” ” Here’s the unfortunate thing: I was mostly right.

Two American HR Departments
There are two types of American HR departments. The first is a younger, recruiting-focused department that uses technology to build a case for change. Does that sound like jargon? Yes, yes it is. These talent-minded pros use jargon to talk about what they do.) They don’t care about reporting to the CHRO or VP of HR because they want to be tied to business metrics and results. You’ll find this department on the coasts and maybe in the more densely populated cities in the Midwest. The second HR department skews older and focuses on policies/processes to enable the business. Sunday was a good day. walked around the outdoor markets near Mısır Çarşısı and stayed awake by taking a Bosporus river cruise. There’s an open-air boat that takes you around for $4 — no stops.

About WorkHuman
Hi, everybody. I’m back from my crazy trip to Istanbul via London. I had a great time, but I’m exhausted. went with my friend, Jennifer McClure. We have so many crazy stories that I’ll share next week. But right now I wanted to tell you that Jennifer is reading Thrive by Arianna Huffington. Have you read it? haven’t, but it looks good. know this because the book was on her bedside table as I was rummaging through her stuff, and I read the jacket. So Jennifer’s nighttime reading reminded me to tell you about WorkHuman 2016. haven’t read it, yet.

What?! Join us in May on a stage overlooking all of Los Angeles, where we will explore the role of HR in the evolving organization. Your experience will begin with an introduction to bigSTORY , through a story about the future of HR that you’ll build with other attendees by playing a game. Then, theater! Immersive theater!
