[2015] I’m from HR. And I’m Here to Help.
I really am. But I understand why you may not believe me. Over the years, perhaps, you’ve had frustrating interactions with poker-faced human resources ladies desperately clinging to antiquated policies and procedures. It’s entirely possible that an HR Business Partner, who, according to your company collateral is supposed to ‘build coalitions and effect change,’ only brought about frustration by tossing up roadblocks and obstacles. But I’m going to let you in on a little secret… Many HR practitioners are not, deep down, the black-hearted trolls they appear to be. Didn’t you? General HR

[2015] Another View of HR ‘Big Data’
Workday’s Insight Applications, summarized here , are rolling out in 2015 and are designed to predict future business outcomes. Last week I read this article  explaining that “Big data knows when you’re going to quit your job before you do.” The article relates how VMware is using Workday to predict when and/if certain employees are in danger of leaving the organization. Businesses can input decades of historical staff data into Workday to inform and customize the system’s recommendations. The evolution of HR. Yeah, like they care if you’re going to quit.”. Big company.

[2015] The Community Has Spoken – #truBatonRouge
“HR people and recruiters sure think differently, don’t they?” quote from #truBatonRouge attendee). They sure do; and I’ve talked about it quite a bit. feel somewhat able to pontificate on the subject as I’ve not only worked for an agency, been an internal recruiter, and managed corporate recruiting teams, but have also held numerous HR leadership positions over the years. If we imagine we’re just one ginormous agrarian society, the recruiters are like the hunters and gatherers who track down the talent; they’re out there fishing in the pond where no-one-else is fishing. It can be. Awesome.

[2015] The ennui of the average worker
Once upon a time people worked in offices like this. Desks lined up in neat and orderly rows. Handbags tucked securely inside drawers. Open Open concept…well, for some of the employees. As this picture dates from the 1960’s, my guess is this was where the gals in the secretarial pool sat. The fellas, no doubt, had plush and luxurious offices with windows. I am worn out just looking at this picture. Now for all I know these busy employees were doing stimulating and enthralling work. At first it was fun. Mr. Jones, her boss, was very nice to ‘his girls.’ Restlessness.

[2015] Moving Day! The End of the HR Schoolhouse
You and I have had a great run here at the HR Schoolhouse. This blog was started in 2010 as a place where I could share my thoughts about HR and work, poke a stick at stuff I found absurd or ridiculous, and find solace in the blank page. still intend to do those things…I’m just going to be doing it under my own name. From a practical standpoint this allows me to bring multiple sites (my blog, my business) together. So thanks for being a loyal reader and/or subscriber to the HR Schoolhouse. Peace out. The post Moving Day! The End of the HR Schoolhouse appeared first on HR Schoolhouse.

[2015] Desperate, Sweaty, SWM Looking for ‘Love’
The dating/recruiting comparisons are endless and we’ve been drawing parallels for years. The conversation will continue for some time; we’re waiting, after all, for the much-anticipated eHarmony launch of its recruiting/assessment/matching platform later this year. One thing I’ve never seen dissected though is how one’s approach , to either the dating process or the hiring process, impacts the final outcome. ” ) Or, of course, they just stop trying. (“ Bob has stopped shaving and just sits around his house in his underwear. All he eats is Papa John’s pizza.” dunno.

[2015] You CAN Bring the Sexy Back: ‘Branding’ Employee Discipline
It seems you can’t click open your web browser without reading something about “Employer Branding.” Or “Talent Branding.” Good stuff to be sure; I think it’s important and critical. What fascinates me is how we tend to explore this concept primarily from a talent attraction or recruiting standpoint. Oh sure, during the strategy phase of “employer branding” there is cursory attention paid to overall organizational culture and the end-loop/integration to the employee life cycle. “If we recruit these people,” says Mary the HR leader, “we need to think about retaining them.” Well…yeah. Jesus. MORE >>

[2015] Repetition and Reruns for the HR Win
The other day as I lay prone on the sofa flipping through channels I happened upon “When Harry Met Sally.” The last 30 minutes of “When Harry Met Sally.”. Now I’ve seen this movie so many times I feel as if I not only assisted in writing the script but also hung out during filming and gave notes to the actors, picked out the set decorations, and had a hand in Meg Ryan’s wardrobe. I can sing along to every song on the Harry Connick Jr. infused soundtrack. laugh at the same lines (every time) and usually tear up, right on cue, at the end. So, naturally, I settled in and re-watched the ending. MORE >>

    [2015] Running the Family Business
A bit of news came out last night about our beloved Saints. As reported by The Times-Picayune , “ New Orleans Saints, Pelicans ownership shocker: wife Gayle, not granddaughter Rita, will control empire after Tom Benson dies.”. Of course, as with anything of this sort, there’s all manner of speculation. Did Rita want to eventually move the team out of New Orleans? Is Gayle (a much younger 3 rd wife for Tom Benson) a gold-digger? How is Gayle going to run this show when her primary business achievement was having a failed interior design company? Oh Rita. That’s a new assistant every 2.4 months. MORE >>

    [2015] Why @Victorio_M is Awesome! #timsackettday
When I think about my friend Victorio Millian I have strong visual recollections. I see the beautiful photos he takes of his beloved NYC and the smiling faces of his two kids and their mother. remember the times we’ve been able to sit down and have a chat and a bit of fun at various events over the years. remember that the first time we met face to face (as people are wont to say) was in an elevator. In 2010. Victorio is a human resources professional. And a damn good one. Find him and talk to him and you’ll know exactly why I feel the way I do: Victorio on Twitter. Victorio on LinkedIn. MORE >>
