Beds
Laurie Ruettimann
MARCH 31, 2016
We moved to North Carolina in 2008. My husband and I can’t seem to agree on beds. We had a queen-sized Stearns & Foster mattress that was slowly turning into a taco. Every night, I slept in a saggy pocket of sadness. We eventually had a conversation about the bed in 2010 or 2011. I don’t remember. We went to Macy’s and bought a Serta innerspring bed. No drama. Jesus.).

Thanks to George Bush and the economic crash in 2008, the internet gave me an opportunity to be helpful. I’m missing a tweet-up in Raleigh , tonight. I’m bummed. have to work. By working, I mean that I have to go to another town and talk about some stuff. Then I get to have dinner with friends that I initially met through the internet. Man, the internet is something else! This movie is an exact depiction of every HR conference I’ve ever attended since 2008. I’m obsessed with the movie Cedar Rapids. Have you seen it? Insurance brokers in Iowa get crunk. Hijinx ensue. What’s not to love? Since watching the film, I’ve been laser focused on doing a conference in Cedar Rapids. swear to god, this is true. It’s a bucket list item.
Cloud Computing
Workday
SEPTEMBER 4, 2008
The term “Cloud Computing” is getting a lot of air play these days — it is the computing equivalent of a U.S. Presidential Election. It has loads of twists and turns, plenty of eager participants, lots of money being spent on it and it gets to consume large amounts of the news cycle…often without a lot of new information. So what exactly is “Cloud Computing”? I’m gonna have a crack at answering that question and (as an encore) talk a little about where Workday stands in the whole Cloud Computing debate
The Strangest Vacation Policy I've Ever Seen
Evil HR Lady
JULY 14, 2008
We are a very small company and, up until now, haven’t had a need for anything more than a vacation policy. Recently, I have been placed in charge of creating a sick leave policy or PTO policy. My research has lead me to wonder about the legality of our vacation policy. Basically we are given a set number of days off for various years of service. Where the issue lies is taking the vacation time. So if I take 5 day vacation in January, I only have to use 2 ½ days of my paid vacation time. If I take the same vacation in July, I have to use 7 ½ days of my paid vacation time. Yes, you heard me.
Why Didn't You Hire Me?

APRIL 25, 2008
A friend of mine asked me this and since I am not in HR, I wanted to get a professional opinion. She had an interview a few months ago, and a couple of weeks later found out she didn't get the job. Last week she saw that the company is advertising the position again, so she forwarded her resume to them again and said she was still interested. The response she got back was an email stating they are "pursuing other candidates". My friend wants to if it is ever okay to ask them why they aren't considering her. Am I right? What would you advise? Yes, yes, I understand. Other people would. Right?

Thoughts about Talent Management

Myth 2: Executive succession planning is essential for the ongoing success of any company – actually, from an employee performance and retention perspective at larger companies, managers have more direct impact than executives. Myth 3: Canned reviews are better than none- actually this is true, but it’s still not good enough and we shouldn’t settle for it. How un-motivating.

How Sending My Child to School Taught Me About Why People Hate HR
Evil HR Lady
SEPTEMBER 3, 2008
I'm a fan of transparency, efficiency and as little paperwork as possible. It seems the school system tries to be opaque, mind-numbingly slow and filled with paper. As I navigated the system, I started to think "this is why people hate HR," because as much as I love letting people know what's going on, I know not all HR departments are like that. All of these trips involved filling out forms.
