The 'I' in Team
Working Girl
NOVEMBER 27, 2009
"There''s no ''i'' in team." I''ve never liked that phrase because I think it sells teams short by devaluing its members. Successful teamwork requires collaboration, which means putting team success ahead of your own agenda. But a key measure of team success is throughput. So, there may not be a small ''i'' in team but there is a big ''I''. As in, ''Don''t worry, guys, I have it covered.''.

As Congress debates health care reform, it's worth noting that employers are already taking steps to bring down their health care costs, whether it's setting up wellness programs for workers -- or requiring employees who have certain

Thanks to Paul Hebert for his thoughtful response (as well as those who commented) to my post below here. It’s a fitting topic, given that it was my worst day of attendance this semester. Part of that could be attributable to Wisconsin culture (it is the start of deer season), as well as the fact that classes are cancelled tomorrow for Thanksgiving and some students may have decided to get an early jump on the holiday. Anyway, here are my comments to Paul (and others): 1. Do all the homework problems assigned. Do not wait until the night before to do the homework. Start the homework early.

I am an executive director for a small company, and I report directly to the company president. The office hours for my company are 8 am to 5 pm, and every employee has to badge is and no one is required to badge out. All employees, exempt and non-exempt, enter their arrival and departure times into the company time-tracking system. There is a director (Mr. X, we'll call him) who is a problematic performer. Among other things, he consistently arrives at the office 10-25 minutes late, and frequently much more than that. They don't get comp time either. So - why is this guy still here? Really.

Training and learning organizations today play an active role in contributing to the bottom line of any organization by aligning their objectives to the immediate business objectives. This provides a solid ground for cost justification and encourages businesses to place training groups right where they should be, at the heart of a growing, thriving, learning culture.

While the fall semester is winding down, I am already thinking and planning for spring semester. One of the classes I will be teaching (and usually do teach) is Statistics for Business and Economics.at 8:00 A.M. Not surprisingly, attendance tends to be a bit problematic. In a class such as statistics, a single absence can often have deleterious effects on grades since much of the material builds on that which was previously taught earlier in the semester. With that in mind, I am contemplating switching to a different attendance/absence policy in the Spring. How will it affect student behavior?
