By Derek Jensen ( Tysto ) – Own work , Public Domain, Link. That sounds more “glass-half-full” than “ Don’t be like the Dallas Mavericks: 11 ways to avoid a Sports Illustrated report chronicling twenty years of allegations of sexual harassment and mismanagement in your workplace. ” Yeah, I’m comfortable with the title of today’s blog post.
Had a really talented lady reach out to me the other day.; 49 years old, college grad, great portfolio of work. She has been interviewing and is being told she is “overqualified.
How do you address employees who aren’t performing? How do you use work goals to improve employee motivation, and decide what goal to work on? Are certain types of goals better than others for increasing motivation? These are all excellent questions and I’ll get to them in a moment, but first, some context. I joined 15Five’s Director of People Science, Courtney Bigony and Chief Culture Officer, Shane Metcalf, in a recent webinar where we addressed ratings and compensation as they relate to perfo
This article was originally published on Forbes.com, under Jeff Miller's Forbes Human Resources Council column. We've entered a new wave of work that has nothing to do with robots. The gig economy is here. In recent years, “gigging" has moved beyond the realm of Uber, TaskRabbit and their ilk, quickly permeating every industry. And, by some reports, more than 50% of the workforce will be freelance within the next decade.

Editor's Note: We would never dream of trying to predict the future—that's why we left it up to the futurists. In this series , we interview experts in HR, recruiting and the future of work to get their take on what's next. The future is scary when you have no idea what's coming—but that doesn't mean companies and their human resources teams are powerless in preparing themselves.
Just because we use a computer to process something doesn’t mean it’s high tech. A great example is today’s Time Well Spent from our friends at Kronos. While spreadsheets are created on computers, that doesn’t mean they’re the most effective and efficient way of doing something. It’s time for us to realize that technology comes in levels. There’s the word processing and spreadsheet level.

Between group texts and always-on social media networks, your employees already consider screens and keyboards as vital means to ongoing conversations outside of the workplace. And your company likely uses social channels to build brand awareness, target users with focused messages, handle customer service conversations and more. Now, increasing evidence shows that better communication and using social tools within the workplace can foster increased connection and productivity.

I admit that I’m a planner. But more important than admitting that I plan everything is that I really like to plan. I believe it’s because I invest in planning tools. Tools to help you plan do not have to be expensive. They do need to work. For you. Someone else’s planning tools may or may not be the best for you. In addition, while it would be awesome to have one planning tool that does everything, I haven’t found that to be the case.

I’ve always had a passion for giving back and caring for others, but I always struggled with the idea of choosing to go down that path as my career. I never wanted it to lose the meaning by becoming a job that I was required to do. So, I made the choice early on in my career to give back to my community in parallel with my career and that idea has never felt more supported than it does at Achievers.
2018 is the year that learning and performance are finally intersecting. I’m talking with a variety of vendors that are tackling this, and one of them that is poised to do it well is Saba. The company is on positive track more than a year after its latest acquisition, and the roadmap shared at the event promises continued development around mobile capabilities, user experience, and more.
It’s widely considered a best practice in recruiting to use job titles that are consistent with market conventions and candidate expectations. If you’re trying to hire an accountant, for instance, calling the position a “General Ledger Specialist, Accruals & Reporting” (what one of my employers called the poor bastards balancing the books and budget), while very specific and somewhat sexy, is not likely to yield a whole lot of passive candidates or even active applicants.

In today’s complex healthcare environment, navigating third-party relationships has become even more challenging—whether it’s vendor relationships, employee activities, or patient-facing interactions. Left unmanaged, these conflicts can compromise trust, regulatory compliance, and even organizational reputation. So, how can healthcare teams stay ahead?
At HighGround, we take diversity seriously, and today we’re giving you a prime example: Alyssa Venere Braun. Revolutionizing the way people treat chronic disease isn’t an easy mission, and Omada Health needed a performance management solution that was up to the challenge. “Nothing that’s ever been created for humanity that’s brand new has come easily, and I think that you’re able to muster a higher level of determination when you know the mission,” says Co-Founder & CEO Sean Duffy.

When culture isn’t consistently lived out across the organization, engagement suffers—and it often starts with a disconnect at the top. In this session, Beth Sunshine, SVP of Up Your Culture at The Center for Sales Strategy, will reveal how HR and executive leaders can close the gap between vision and execution by equipping frontline and mid-level managers to become culture carriers.
A reader writes: I have a small tight-knit team of eight people. The people that I’ve hired in the last two years socialize together quite a bit, which is great. The downside is they don’t invite me or the other managers; the junior members will hang out together and not invite the managers. The disappointing part of this is that this team has historically been very tight and (we hoped) didn’t feel hierarchical.
It can be tough to hear negative feedback in a performance review. If you feel down after a bad review, just know that you’re not alone. According to a Gallup survey , only 14% of employees strongly agree that their performance reviews inspire them to improve. But rather than becoming apathetic or letting a bad performance review defeat you, you can be one of the few employees who use it as an opportunity for growth.
Would you choose to take steps to strengthen your business and enhance its reputation if it meant improving your organization’s ultimate performance? The goal (no pun intended!) of this blog is to lay out the process you’ll need to do just that. A reader writes: On Monday, I got an unexpected call from an internal recruiter. We talked about next steps, and she indicated that if my resume was approved by another member of the firm, I’d get an interview. She said the interviews were on Thursday and Friday, and asked about my availability. I’d previously booked non-refundable (so non-flexible) travel with a friend for Friday, so I told the recruiter I’d be out of town on Friday and only able to interview Thursday.
When a new hire turns out to be a star employee, both the recruiter and the hiring manager can pat themselves on the back for their brilliant choice. Conversely, a bad hire raises questions: who was responsible for selecting that candidate? Put differently – because hiring shouldn’t become a blame game – who needs to improve their recruiting tactics next time?

So says Kevin Ames , co-author of Appreciate: Celebrating People, Inspiring Greatness. Ames, who is Director of Speaking and Training for recognition company O.C. Tanner recently spoke at the Influence Greatness 2018 conference.
