My mother had a stroke when I was 13-years-old and was paralyzed on her left side. At that time, she did her best to be the strong mother she had always been, but things changed. know that the experience of my mom's illness changed my life. It may do the same for you. Charmers.

Branchout, BeKnown and the Bubble

Strategic HCM

I was fascinated by this debate taking place at the Economist recently – are we in a new tech (social media) bubble? There were some highly engaging exchanges, and a thought provoking result – over two thirds of the participants voted yes! At the time, I didn’t agree, but then, it’s been a particularly enthralling week in social media land! BeKnown mashes up Facebook and mashes up Linkedin.

I Just Don't Know What to Do With My iPad.

Working Girl

My husband was recently awarded two iPads at work in recognition for separate projects, making us a two iPad household. That means I now have an iPad, which is fair because I''m his creative muse (which I''m sure he would agree with, at least if he wants dinner). My oldest daughter wanted the iPad but I was like, ''You''re 7 years old. Yes, I''m a seasoned software professional. But I write.

Is My Boss Racist, or Just Being a Good Manager?

Evil HR Lady

Dear Evil HR Lady, I work for a state supported college. have worked there for 23 years. have been passed up for promotion to the top IT job at the school 3 times in the last 9 years. Each time the top job comes available, the President elects NOT to advertise the position internally or externally and just appoints who he wants to have the job. Each time, the position is filled with one of his cronies or someone with little to no experience or formal education or training in the IT field. I am an African America male with 30 years of experience in IT. Is this discrimination?

Rock Stars Need Not Apply

Working Girl

Some people love rock stars - Mark Zuckerberg, for example, thinks they’re 100 times better than everyone else. myself think they''re about 3 times better and there are probably some people who think they''re 5 or 20 times better. Others think they’re more trouble than they’re worth and that a team of solid performers is the way to go. More wisdom from Dave here. So, all kinds of opinions.

#SHRM11 - Day 2 impressions

True Faith HR

Day Two of the 2011 SHRM Annual Conference has come to an end (at least for me.thousands are likely still out taking in the Vegas nightlife). Here are a few impressions from Day 2. Meet the New Boss.Same as the Old Boss. This The Who lyric came to mind as Hank Jackson had the "interim" part of his CEO title removed, as was widely speculated. He shared his rags to riches story, and its nice to know than a failed NBA player can live the dream and become CEO of SHRM. The questions texted to him from the audience made me wonder if that was truly the cream of the crop that were asked. miles today.

#SRConf: Matt Jeffery on Recruitment 4.0

Strategic HCM

Just before lunch we had a panel featuring Matt Jeffery, head of EMEA Talent Acquisition at Autodesk; Lisa Scales at Tribepad and others. Matt and Lisa had a good debate about the future of recruiting agencies (not good! – why would you pay a huge fee to an agency when you can use Linkedin etc yourself). The focus of recruiting is now on communities and target audiences.

#SHRM 11 - Day 1 Highlights and Trends

True Faith HR

The first of the four and a half day SHRM 2011 Annual Conference is in the books. Most of the day was spent with the Student Conference. The consistent theme running through out the day was generational differences. From Aaron Kesher''s opening session to Joshua''s Fredenburg''s keynote address to the social media session to close the day, generational differences were on everyone''s mind. They focused on how to network, the importance of a MBA, how to develop a backbone in HR, how you get into HR, and a few HR horror stories were thrown in for good measure. The volunteers. The networking.

And The Winners Are

Evil HR Lady

The winners of the stupidest title are: Michelle with her "Decision Support Professional." TheAssistant with "Outreach and Communications Guru." Any title with "Guru" in it, is a bad one. And Anonymous with the "Large and Complex Team Leader." It was really, really, hard to choose and I thank you all. wanted to include the Dam Supervisor from Tales of a Young Recruiter, but it actually is a very good title. Now I want to go work for a HydroElectric plant so I can be Dam HR Manager. Thanks to everyone who participated. love you all

Social media and Soiled underwear

Strategic HCM

I presented on the opportunities of using social media (and in focusing on social outcomes) at the SAP HR Summit at the end of last week. The session went well and got lots of interest, though only in the room as nobody, other than SAP themselves, were using Twitter. So this reinforced the point I made last week too, that despite the talk, there’s still very little walk going on in this area.

Diversity is You

NoExcusesHR

I’ve been having more and more conversations about diversity lately. Many of the people I speak to jump to the conclusion that I’m somehow discussing employment practices. Not true…selection is such a small part of diversity. Here’s where Joe comes in…diversity is difference. Damn, that’s good. Simple and good. That Means You…and Me Diversity isn’t only about people, but that is where it starts.

HR Transformation at SAP

Strategic HCM

My favourite presentation at last week’s SAP HR Transformation summit focused on SAP itself. Roger Bellis, their European SVP for Talent, Leadership and Organisation Development (and a former client from Barclays) explained that SAP is now a mega company, and its people management challenges are a bit like a teenager moving into adulthood. But of course in China it’s completely different.

#SHRM11 - Day 4 impressions

So, I would have loved to have posted this yesterday, but, in a SHRM world where conference days are measured in dog time, and one day is so jam packed it feels like a week, I simply didn''t get to it until this morning. So, here are the highlights, lowlights, and other trivia from Day 4: Keynotes kept getting better and better. From the Q&A with Richard Branson, and the sterling performance from Arianna Huffington, it was turned up to 11 with Tony Hsieh from Zappos. Great session speakers. Laurie Ruettimann spoke on "The Future Of HR is Social" and Joe Gerstandt spoke on "No. miles. miles.

Unmet Expectations

NoExcusesHR

My father passed away ten years ago, and from the time I was a young boy I can remember him telling me about his best friend. They did everything together: pretended to be Charlie Chan detectives, went fishing, played on the high school basketball team and were President and Vice President of the Student Body. He went on to have a successful career as a United Methodist Minister. No Excuses.
