You Cut Costs: Now Build a Long Term Roadmap

Josh Bersin

This week we met with the head of L&D from a large financial services institution. This company, like many others, has just completed a wrenching reorganization and redesign of its global learning organization to save money. In this particular case the company is also integrating the L&D teams from several acquired companies. (I know this. Our Strength Lies in Our.

Unity. I know you thought I was going to say "our strength lies in our diversity." That (and similar messages) are prevalent. We have diversity committees, VPs of Diversity, affirmative action plans and call minority candidates "diverse candidates." (Which drives me absolutely insane, but that's another topic.) When we moved to Switzerland we enrolled our daughter in one of the most "diverse" schools on the planet.

The Big Question: How Do You Spend Your Time?

The Bamboo Project Blog

Last night I had a quick IM chat with Christine Martell , who asked me when I planned to re-join the online community--her way of pointing out that I've had my G-talk status on "invisible" for several weeks now, haven't done a Twitter update in 16 days and have clearly been remiss in posting here. So it was serendipitous to find that the Learning Circuits Big Question this month is "how do you spend your time?

What Grandaddy Taught me about Information Flow

Transparent Office

My grandfather never used computers, and he died when "wiki" was still just a word in Hawaiian. But in a single comment he taught me all about Enterprise 2.0. Grandaddy (known to the rest of the world as Phil Plesofsky) was a mild-mannered, old-school stock broker with a boutique brokerage firm in Chicago. He wore pin-stripe suits so conservative that once he accidentally bought the same suit twice.

Social networking or stand up?

Working Girl

'In the early days I assumed that social applications like Facebook and Twitter were all about networking because, well, that''s what everyone said. But then I got confused because there didn''t seem to be all that much networking going on. For example, after first reconnecting with school friends and catching up for all of five minutes, most of my Facebook relationships involved my ''friends'' letting me know what movie or flower they are at all hours of the day and night.

Who's in the Market for Learning: Individuals or Organizations?

The Bamboo Project Blog

As part of the ongoing conversation on the future business models for learning with Tony Karrer, I mentioned in both my blog post and in a comment on Tony's blog that I think we're going to see a move away from companies and organizations to individuals as the consumers of learning products and services. Tony followed up by asking if I had anything to back up my thinking.

Twitter is the new CNN

Transparent Office

CNN thought its biggest threat was FOX News. It was wrong. The competition is Twitter , and the competition is winning. In 1980, CNN went live as America's first all-news TV network. It raised a fundamental question: Is there enough news worth watching to justify an all-news network? For years, CNN trudged along as an interesting experiment, more observed than watched.

A Few Good Managers

Working Girl

'A friend of mine who is looking for a new manager at her company recently asked me for advice on finding a good one. Although the importance of good management is a recurring theme on this blog, it''s not an easy question to answer. First of all, what is a good manager? It''s fairly subjective but I think most of us can agree that we''d rather work for someone who is honest, competent and mentoring than someone who is a self-serving suck up who spends all their time angling for the next promoti

The best review I ever had

'I''ve written several posts about how a good manager puts the ''manage'' into performance management. I think we can all agree that the manager plays an important role but what does that actually mean when push comes to shove? CIOs: It's Strategy Time

Transparent Office

Most CIOs I talk to want to spend more time on strategy--not platform strategy or application strategy, but business strategy. The fun part of their job isn't about keeping the lights on or the servers cooled. It's about using technology to fundamentally improve the way their companies do business. Strategic relevance can be a sore spot for CIOs. Although most line managers agree in principle that IT is strategically important, CIOs still struggle for a seat at the strategy table.

Quit or Fired?

Evil HR Lady

I live in CA. I worked for a small business owner for two plus years. Just recently I gave him two weeks notice in writing. He asked me to stay and stay and stay longer and I said “okay”. That meant that I would be working for him for at least three or four more weeks, maybe more. The next work day, he told me that I did not need to come back and after the close of business I did not come back to work.
