'This is another post in the occasional series on healthcare and human resources (#HealthcareHR.) Today''s post focuses on taking a bold step in order to create a pro-employee culture. I find it interesting that in one of the most stressful industries, if not the most stressful, the role of employee ombudsman is not widely used in healthcare settings.
We always hear that first impressions matter. Immediately our minds gravitate toward meeting people in business and social settings, interviews or even sales calls. Why don’t we think of the first impression we make when we add a new employee to our company? The goal at any company should be that the new prospect will be so impressed and wowed by his/her first day that he/she goes home and tells someone that it was the “best first day on the job EVER.
'I come from a family of educators. One uncle was a math teacher for 35+ years with Milwaukee Public Schools. My cousin teaches AP Chemistry in Green Bay. My wife is a school psychologist. My mom taught choir at the K-12 and college level. My dad was a Psychology professor for 40+ years at Michigan State. I''ve been teaching for 18 years. The curriculum in which I was trained was focused on Labor Economics and Human Resource Management theory and practice.
It can be said that recognition means most coming from the people who are impacted by the behavior, but more often than not, administering and maintaining a recognition program falls on the shoulders of HR and management. Many times it’s because the perception is that it’s too big of an initiative for people to manage on top of their daily duties – surely someone like HR needs to own and run it.

'(Photo credit: s_falkow). In these challenging times when every dollar spent must be a wise investment, one of those decisions is where you should spend both time and money in terms of business development. One thing is for sure, you will need to contribute in order to gain. If you join a networking group thinking I’ll just attend and business will come my way, you’re going to be sorely disappointed.
'Like most, I''ve been ruminating over the weekend over Friday''s tragedy in Connecticut, and watching the various pundits pontificate on the various issues (gun control, mental illness, violent videogames and movies) and potential solutions, many of which I mentioned in yesterday''s post. However, a crucial conversation has been missing. Much of the discussion has been about gun rights to the point where gun rights advocates feel they are victims as well.
Yesterday at our company all-hands, we had all offices dialed in and connected, albeit virtually, to each other to celebrate a strong year and have one last team hoorah before 2013 begins. I think most could say that a year-end, all-hands meeting is not the definition of fun or engaging, so I wasn’t too pumped. Just another to-do before my afternoon of packed meetings.

You landed the interview. Awesome! Now dont screw it up. I’ve interviewed thousands of people for jobs ranging from entry-level to executive. Easily three-fourths of the candidates made basic interviewing mistakes. Did I still hire some of them? Absolutely… but never count on your qualifications and experience to outweigh a bad interview.
How are you managing employee engagement for managers? On a recent flight from Winnipeg to Toronto I refreshed my previous reading and notes of Henry Mintzberg’s 2009 book, Managing. He is truly a Canadian and global treasure in management thinking. Over the past 4 or 5 years there has been a big uptake on helping managers improve employee engagement.
'I''ve come to realize two important things over the last year. The first is that I enjoy blogging much more than I ever thought I would. The ability to engage with people from around the world, to challenge conventional thought, and to hold myself, and you, accountable on the most public of platforms can be very powerful. The second is that I feel a need to have NoExcusesHR be more.

Each of the plugins below are in use by the EffortlessHR Blog and they all work in uniquely different ways to stop bots and spammers dead in their tracks. Modern go-to-market teams know it takes more than one email to break through the noise. Multiple touchpoints means more ways to get your pitch right — and, potentially, more ways to be wrong. The good news? Once you know how to write compelling, one-off emails to entice prospective customers, you can easily do the same across a short sequence of emails.
'As I have written several times on this blog and elsewhere , I appreciate the SHRM Foundation. Their products and work are outstanding. One of the videos from the SHRM Foundation I used to show in my HR class was entitled "HR Heroes: What it means to be a Strategic HR Leader in the 21st Century" (later renamed HR Role Models) It featured Libby Sartain and others discussing, as the title suggests, strategic leadership at both high-tech and low-tech companies.

Do you have work criteria? Viv McWaters is one of my favorite bloggers as she posts on Beyond the Edge. I like her sense of connection, community, improvisation, facilitation, and work. 'A good corporate image is now more than ever absolutely essential. In the post-Enron era it seems the spin doctors are busier than ever managing just about every customer facing contact point imaginable. Quite honestly I think that is the right thing to do…from an official corporate perspective. But what about those leaders inside the company that might help balance the corporate spin with a voice that is a bit edgy or confrontational?
'Money is a tricky motivator for employees. Based on an infographic from Bolt Insurance , 22 percent of employees leave their jobs because of pay/benefits issues. But the biggest reasons have more to do with non-monetary factors: · Heavy workload — 43 percent · Lack of opportunities for growth and advancement — 43 percent · Unrealistic job expectations — 40 percent Yes, people want raises (especially if you’ve been in a salary freeze for three years), but more money won’t always keep people if t

Great coaches ask, and own their strength and strengthening feedback, rather than fault-finding and telling. Help others coach themselves by beginning with three engaging self-feedback questions after a specific performance or during a one year performance review: What stood out for you? What did you like about what you did? What would you do differently if you were to do it again?
'One of my favorite responsibilities is to address new staff members each month when they attend new employee orientation. I kick things off for the first hour and try to make it anything but normal. I yell, strut around the large conference room making jokes, using videos, a slide deck, and banter back and forth with one of our HR employees who goes along with my shenanigans as if we were a stand up comedy team.
I recently heard someone saying, “ Project management is just science. ” “Do I agree?” I asked myself. Here is what I think: Project management is both science and art, but it is the art of project management that makes great project managers. 'Growing up, it is not uncommon for many of your childhood friends to be the children of your parents'' friends. The parents would get together for dinner and drinks and, inevitably, the kids would be thrown into the mix. A couple of years ago, we had a holiday gathering with some of those long-time family friends. We were reminiscing on the many memories we shared, and the question arose from one of our parents, "What do you feel was the worst thing we did as parents?
