A Better New Year’s Resolution
Trust Matters
DECEMBER 31, 2015
It’s that time of year again – resolutions. We all start to assess how we can improve on the last year. I wrote a pretty good blog post at this time nine years ago, and I haven’t improved on it yet. Here it is again. Happy New Year! —————–. My unscientific sampling says many people make New Years resolutions, but few follow through. Net result—unhappiness. It doesn’t have to be that way. You could, of course, just try harder, stiffen your resolve, etc. But you’ve been there, tried that. You could also ditch the whole idea and just stop making resolutions. We worry less.

Transparency Is the Key To Recruiting Young Talent
SAP Innovation
DECEMBER 31, 2015
When you were searching for jobs in the early days of your career, was “transparency” something that even crossed your mind? For many of us, the whole process was a dance – an art form where both the candidate and the recruiter put their game face on and sold themselves. The job search has changed, and if you’re still trying to impress candidates with a sales pitch that’s anything less than 100% authentic, you will fail. Millennials expect transparency, and can spot a fraud pretty quickly. And most of all, Millennials want employers to provide a sense of purpose.”. CEO Kim Peters.

After my letter was published last year, the situation resolved itself fairly quickly, with Old Boss finally finding another job and me being promoted as planned. Silos Can Be Costly In Banks
SAP Innovation
DECEMBER 31, 2015
Information silos and poor risk management have cost global banks billions, writes Gillian Tett, U.S. managing editor and columnist at the Financial Times. In her recent book The Silo Effect , Tett shows how risk managers didn’t know what was happening in some parts of the bank, and sometimes didn’t even know those parts existed. The traders who did understand had little interest in telling because they were making so much money, often because the bank’s accounting practices had miscategorized financial instruments in a way that concealed their risk.
