Organizations need to create a culture of support around leave — and that requires helping both managers and employees change their mindsets. Managers need training to help develop their emotional intelligence, so they know a) what showing support looks like and b) how to set aside their own biases about taking leave. MORE

I admit it. I have been one of those HR people reluctant to hire ex-offenders under the assumption that once trouble – always trouble. But my husband helped me realize the error of this stereotyping. He worked in the court system for 20 years, dealing with felons and their legal financial obligations. Having heard his stories, I’ve realized that our society often sets up those released from prison for failure through a myriad of barriers to re-entry. MORE

It’s five answers to five questions. Here we go…. Can I take confiscate my coworkers’ screaming monkey toy? Today, as has happened multiple times in the last few months, some of my nearby coworkers in our relatively small satellite office decided to play catch with this “screaming monkey toy.”. The noise it makes is outrageously loud, especially in our small space, and I’ve previously indicated (politely) to coworkers that I find the noise not only distracting, but extremely annoying. MORE
