I had applied to a few local part-time jobs prior to writing to AAM for the rest of the Spring/Summer semester hoping to save some money, and I was hired by my top choice today. Back in 2013, an unemployed graduate used a billboard to let potential employers know that he was looking for a job. It’s not uncommon for companies to place ‘Now hiring’ or ‘We’re hiring’ banners outside their stores, on college campuses, on bus or metro stations and at job fair booths. The result? They are inexpensive.
Ben Gordon: Hire people before you need them. We learned this early on, and then we’ve re-learned every six months or so. and something that you don’t need to be the one doing and can hire for?—?like, you should probably hire for it immediately and spend your time doing things that only you can do.
I joined Raytheon Technologies (formerly United Technologies) in 2013 and continued to pursue roles that would give me a broad understanding of the business, first moving into roles of increasing responsibility within the legal group and then eventually exiting the legal group to lead the Oxygen & PSU business.
The best learning you get is by doing and the power you hold as an early stage company is the ability to test things quickly and cheaply without huge repercussions. Less talking and more doing; this one could sometimes be a struggle for me and Ben early on. That’s often your only advantage. Can you tell us a bit about your “backstory”?
