Feedback: The mere mention of the word can make your blood pressure rise and your defenses go up. For many of us, it’s a dirty word we associate with bias, politics, resentment, and self-doubt. Yes, feedback has a branding problem – a negative reputation that has been built one lousy experience at a time.
For years, leaders in the HR/Management space, academics, and top business minds have all sought to define organizational culture. They have largely failed. This is, of course, no easy task. Culture is nebulous, something that we feel but just can’t put a name to. It’s like the immortal soul. We can’t point to it, and some say that it doesn’t exist, but who can deny that there is something magical and mysterious about our lives?
A web search on “AI in HR” reveals a mind-boggling array of possibilities. For example, AI can choose candidate sources, predict candidate performance, offer coaching and learning, and even suggest employee pay levels. Yet, a recent IBM survey suggests that only 66% of CEOs believe cognitive computing can drive significant value in HR, and only 50% of HR executives recognize that cognitive computing has the power to transform key dimensions of HR.
While there may be some minor generational differences in workplace preferences, the truth is ALL your people want to learn, grow, use their strengths and be recognized and appreciated for their efforts. I’ve written extensively about the myth that Millennials are fundamentally different than other generations. The real point is that someone at that life stage has different needs.
