Millennials have proven to be challenging in the organizational context, having managers all over the world racking their brain on how to handle, motivate and retain them. Unlike their predecessors, they are not spontaneously motivated by ‘key performance indicators’ (KPI) but rather crave continuous learning. Millennials are seemingly continuously looking for a higher purpose in their life and, in extension thereof, in their jobs.
About eight years ago, I joined an organization that was pretty serious about workplace wellness. Since the wellness team rolled up to me as the HR leader, I got pretty serious about learning what it was all about quickly. Most of the focus, I learned, was on improving the physical health of our employee population. This particular organization had been investing in wellness programs for years, long before most organizations started to take it seriously.
As an employer, you have a responsibility to keep your staff safe, and this includes ensuring that they uphold good mental health. It should go without saying, but you shouldn’t expect your team to work under cramped conditions, nor should you make them regularly work past their contracted hours. Doing so can cause issues to their mental health, which will, in turn, create problems for your work.

We spend a lot of time talking about creating employee engagement. The rationale being that engaged employees are highly productive. And productivity fuels the business. In creating employee engagement, we need to think about employee satisfaction. I don’t see how a dissatisfied employee becomes engaged. It seems like their dissatisfaction with the company, their manager, their work, etc. is a barrier to engagement.
