Over the past year, or so, faculty at our institution of higher learning have been having discussions about, what we perceive, as "disruptive" student behaviors in the classroom. As a small, liberal arts school, with relatively small class sizes (less than 35 students per class), student actions out of the norm become more noticeable. So, it was with great interest when I read about a student blog called "Raging Wildflower" and a post he made about cell phone bans. He goes on to say, "I pay their fees for a degree, in turn, respect my decision to text." Very worth reading just for the comments.
Failure to Hire
Evil HR Lady

Recently, my company did not hire someone primarily because she was the sister of a former employee that did not leave on good terms. Of course they tried to frame this in a different way, but the reason was obvious. Is this legal? I've tried to look up federal laws on the subject, and I'm wondering if this type of action falls under illegal discrimination, since the person's non-hiring was based solely on her family relation to the former employee. First of all, illegal discrimination is quite limited. It's not illegal to discriminate against family members. That makes absolutely no sense.

I''ve read a couple of thoughtful and thought-provoking posts lately on how teams may perform better without stars, including this one at The HR Capitalist. First of all, let me say that I have personal experience with teams that have one ''go to'' person, which depending on the topic can either be frustrating or kind of nice.* When the go to person moves on, the team shakes out into a new constellation, sometimes a better, more open one with new stars, sometimes a sad, disfunctional one. This being said, I''m not sure I buy into the idea that a good team doesn''t need any stars. Thomas L.
