Tactical vs. Strategic Employment Screening
Aurico
JANUARY 19, 2012
With the unemployment rate at 8.6% in November 2011, many prospective employees are “beefing up” their resumes. Much news has been made over the years about truth in advertising, but little emphasis has been placed on truth in hiring. The Society for Human Resource Management states 45% of all resumes contain one major fabrication, while The Wall Street Journal reports that 34% of all job applications contain lies regarding experience, education and the ability to perform essential job functions. Padded resumes can hit a company hard. Background Screening Hiring

Purpose Precedes Process

JANUARY 15, 2012
If process is a vehicle, purpose is the compass. Purpose gives a definite direction to processes. People (and their expertise) are the drivers. Technology acts as an accelerator. Most system implementation or change initiatives focus enough on the P-P-T – People, process and technology and somewhere along the lines, the focus on purpose blurs. have seen improvement experts who are always on the quest to find the next new thing, a fancy template or a complex matrix document that they can include in their ‘kitty’ of best practices. "Not It!"

As a child my friends and I played " tag." It was a simple game where one person was "it" and the others ran around trying not to get tagged. If you were caught you were now "it." The game always started the same way, everyone involved shouted out "Not It!" so they could avoid the punishment of being the one. The punishment of being the one. Why is that so difficult? What message does that send?

Last Friday I took a couple of hours off to run some personal errands. wish I had stayed home, because my retinas are forever emblazoned with the visions I saw in "casual Friday" workplaces as I went to take care of my business. Strategy v. Execution
NoExcusesHR
JANUARY 17, 2012
Are these words at odds with each other? Is it possible to develop a strategic plan and also lead the execution of that plan? I''m not talking about assigning the implementation steps to a support team; I''m asking if the same person can effectively develop a high level strategic plan and then provide the leadership to make it happen? But how they manage is critical. That''s right, mandatory.

Project Social: Popularity
Working Girl
JANUARY 15, 2012
One of the early goals of project social was to see how different themes drove more visits and comments. My project social partner Dave Ryan and I are occasionally (OK, frequently) baffled by which posts get lots of traffic, which receive the most comments and which are comparatively ignored. Which makes it interesting to take stock at the beginning of a new year to see which posts were the most popular overall and compare these to the ones we thought were the best. It turns out that personal preference is rarely a reliable indicator of popularity. Sometimes you strike a chord.

Are You Measuring What Counts?
ReviewSNAP
JANUARY 15, 2012
Employees need to understand what is important for them to focus on in the course of doing their jobs. That is an obvious observation. But are the selected competencies really the most critical relative to the focus employees will place on them? In other words, will focusing on those competencies help optimize contribution to team and organizational success? Sometimes the competencies selected for measuring performance don''t match the most critical elements of the job. It helps to start with an "inventory" of the critical aspects of the job.
