3 Things to Do While You Wait on a Job Offer
45 Things
MAY 31, 2011
Last week I wrote a post about what parents can do to help their college graduates who have to move back home until they find a job. Now, I'm going to write a post for college graduates who are jobless -- and it has nothing to do with writing a resume or brushing up on interview skills. Just think of this as the class they never gave in summer school. 1. Improve your handwriting. know, I know.
Project Social: Do You Facebook?
Working Girl
MAY 29, 2011
Dave, Lyn and I decided to carry on with the ‘social’ themes we’ve been tackling lately and discuss the different social mediums we are active in and how we use them. Dave already has his post up at HR Official and Lyn’s aiming for Monday over at the Bacon Hut. When it comes to social media, I pretty much stick to the basics: LinkedIn , Facebook , Twitter , blog. I don’t use Foursquare , although I totally would if I were a stalker. I don’t even have a logon for HootSuite or Empire Avenue. know, I sound soooo 2007… As I explained in an earlier post, I’m a late adopter. It''s addictive.

I watched the film Waiting for Superman with great expectations, and, not surprisingly, those expectations were not met. Directed by Davis Guggenheim (director of Al Gore''s An Inconvenient Truth and husband of actress Elizabeth Shue) , the documentary focuses on the failing U.S. First, the film never explores what exactly defines "good teaching." How are charter schools hiring "better" teachers?

"Cowardice asks the question is it safe? Expediency asks the question is it politic? Vanity asks the question is it popular? But conscience asks the question is it right? Dear Evil HR Lady, I’m an American and male and am currently filling a 2 year expat assignment in Europe. It turns out that the high level male employees frequent the sauna in the company gym. Naked. I’ve been told that if I really want my ideas to be heard, the best way to do this is to join the executive team in the sauna. I’ve also been told that it would be very offensive if I was not naked. My American sensibilities make me cringe, but should I join them? Should You Get Naked With Your Boss

Should You Dispute a Performance Appraisal
Evil HR Lady
JUNE 2, 2011
Dear Evil HR Lady, I recently received my first performance review at my retail job, and while I was excited to see what feedback my supervisor had for me, I quickly realized the review was completely phoned in. The supervisor marked me average in every category, and at one point referred to me as Henry. My name is Jason. When I pointed this out, my supervisor admitted to being rushed and copying/pasting a lot of identical information from other evaluations. This justified the store manager in giving me a minimal raise. Should You Dispute a Performance Appraisal
38 Lessons I’ve Learned
Human Resource Info4All
JUNE 2, 2011
38 Lessons I’ve Learned 1. Always swallow your pride to say you’re sorry. Being too proud to apologize is never worth it — your relationship suffers for no good benefit. 2. Possessions are worse than worthless — they’re harmful. They add no value to your life, and cost you everything. Not just the money required to buy them, but the time and money spent shopping for them, maintaining them, worrying about them, insuring them, fixing them, etc. 3. Slow down. Rushing is rarely worth it. Life is better enjoyed at a leisurely pace. 4. Goals aren’t as important as we think. Don’t go into debt.

I hate saying no. As an HR professional and leader it just never makes sense for me to refuse anyone. After all, they''re reaching out to me for support. I''m supposed to be there for them, right? Getting Played One of the major pitfalls of having " can''t-say-no syndrome " is that some people will take advantage; and, despite doing this type of work for years, I sometimes don''t recognize it when it''s happening. Shame on me. I''ve learned that I have to stay focused so I can be the "player", and not be the one getting played. hate it when I learn the hard way. This is hard for me to do.
