With the New Year approaching, we frequently get calls and manage projects to re-verify current employee motor vehicle records (driver’s histories). We continue to see a growing trend for HR departments to add annual re-verification to their risk management strategy. Because 23% of applicants have had serious motor vehicle violations due to drugs, alcohol or revoked licenses, we suggest that our clients complete motor vehicle records searches on prospective employees and annually with current employees. Unfortunately, employers in negligent hiring cases lose more than 70% of lawsuits.

FLRA Issues Guidance on Information Requests The Federal Labor Relations Authority’s General Counsel recently issued a guidance document stating that Federal agencies must provide their specific rationale for denying requests for information from Federal employees’ unions when that rationale is employee privacy-related. Quest Releases Drug Testing Index —Marijuana and Opioids Lead U.S. Workforce Positives Quest Diagnostics recently released its latest Drug Testing Index. The findings indicated hydrocodone and oxycodone are two of the leading drugs found in drug screens amongst the U.S. general workforce. The only drug to outrank the two opioids is marijuana, which continues to have the highest positivity rating for workforce drug testing in the U.S. Compared to levels in 2005, oxycodone positives have increased by 96% and hydrocodone positives have increased by 47%. Oh yes, they did … Sometimes they think they’re funny. Sometimes they can’t spell. Here are a few of the memorable things we’ve uncovered while researching driver’s licenses: An applicant consent form listed a driver’s license number, followed by the driver’s state as “Single.” Another applicant tried to pass off a fake driver’s license. The clue? His license said he lived in “Dalls, TX.” Oh deer. I was in South Africa for a few meetings and a workshop on HR and social media last week. In comparison, South Africa’s economy is getting along quite nicely thank you. An article in the Economist this week suggests that Africa will grow by 6% this year and nearly 6% in 2012, about the same as Asia. As the proportion of working-age people to dependents rises, growth should get a boost.
