HR Challenges 2011 – Survey Results
Strategic HCM
FEBRUARY 28, 2011
As may know, I’ve been running a short survey over the last few months. This is now closed and I’ve been through the results. A lot of my questions for qualitative, making it difficult to communicate the results in a short summary but I’ll come back to individual questions from this over the next couple of months. Anyway, I started with key business challenges. Again, I suggest that’s about right.
Is It a Curse -- or Blessing -- To be a Remote Worker?
45 Things
FEBRUARY 28, 2011
Most of the people I know who are remote workers say just like any work situation, there's both good and bad aspects. They love being able to dress more casually, of course, and appreciate that it often gives them a chance to see their kids more. But the downside for many is that they often feel left out of the loop and find it difficult to communicate effectively with the boss. Share the love.

The recent UK labour market statistics pointing to a jobless recovery throughout 2011 and beyond emphasise the need for all organisations to get the most out of the people they currently employ. It’s a shame therefore that most research shows that consultation continues to be performed so poorly. There are broader benefits to listening to employees ideas as well. Ignoring them is not a good idea.

How to Get Your Boss Fired

Dear Evil HR Lady, My coworkers and I are all miserable because our manger is, in a word, terrible. While I’d love to list her shortcomings (they are many), I’ll just say that in the seven months she has been here, she single-handedly ruined what used to be a fantastic, high-functioning group. Finally, one of our coworkers (we’ll call her Tanya) approached HR about the problems we’ve been having. This launched a little investigation into our team. We were sure this investigation would culminate in our manager’s termination. Yet, she persists. We’re feeling pretty helpless right now.

One of the ideas discussed at the Big Rethink which I think has relevance for HR, and in which the treatment of employees is analogous to that of customers, is this way of looking at corporate - or employer – branding: How people form ideas about brands has changed. We’ve tended to think of it a bit like ten pin bowling in which if we have enough enthusiasm we can bowl passive consumers over.
