'Toxic employees - we all know them when we work with them. They are the folks that always have something negative to say in a meeting. The ones who join the conference call halfway in, if they even bother to show up. They not only cause frustration, they can cause significant damages to the workplace. Toxic employees make their teammates 54 percent more likely to quit and cost employers up to three times more in hiring fees, according to our latest report, “ Toxic Employees in the Workpla
'Business meetings are the bane of our professional lives. According to The Muse, managers spent between 35 – 50% of their time in meetings. That’s a pretty significant number. You might be saying, the answer to this is get rid of meetings. But here’s the thing. I doubt that meetings are going away. The definition of meeting is “a coming together of two or more people, by chance or arrangement.
'In the previous installments to this series, we discussed why your company should have a better mobile application process , why it’s important to develop good job ads and have an inspiring brand that’s appealing to the mobile user , how to use social media and sourcing to find the right candidates , how to [ optimize your career page for mobile and why video interviewing is the future when it comes to interviewing mobile candidates.
'This may go without saying, but your employees aren’t like cars and trucks. The average automobile depreciation rate is 15% per year, with new vehicles dropping in value immediately after you drive them off the lot. Unlike cars and trucks, people appreciate in value the longer they work for you. They get more skills and experience, and create essential networks for your business.

'Recently someone asked this question on Quora, a site that I sometimes drop by to help shed some light on the world of HR: If I lie about a past felony on job applications, will the California FCRA keep background checks from finding out? The first two responses to the question were focused on what the law covers and how the person might hide their information–interestingly enough I don’t see their answers on the site anymore, so I’m not sure what to think on that.
'As a leader, how well have you served others? Serving others requires you to be daring, but not in the ways you might imagine. You probably won’t need to bungee jump off a bridge, or engage in some sort of epic battle. But you will need the courage step out of the spotlight, admit your mistakes, and focus instead on serving those you lead. That’s the key message of Cheryl Batchelder’s new book, Dare to Serve: How to Drive Superior Results by Serving Others.

'Building and maintaining a successful company hinges on having the right people to execute projects and drive results. People, we hear time and again, are your company's most valuable asset. But their success — and HR's ability to recruit, engage and retain them — depends on HR pros who are strategic decision-makers, armed with the proper tools to let them excel at their jobs.
'In our continuing series on human resources and technology , I thought it would be good to cover a term that gets thrown around a lot – SaaS. It’s an acronym for Software-as-a-Service. Many times, when I hear the term SaaS, it’s used in the same sentence as “the cloud.” So much so that it’s easy to wonder about the relationship between the two. Are they the same?
'If you’re looking to make better hires, get them in the door more efficiently, and do it all on budget, you should first recognize one of the biggest ways employers aren’t reaching applicants: Mobile. A mobile website, complete with a career page and a mobile job application process handled entirely on a phone or tablet is something candidates have consistently made clear they’re looking for.
'If your job is to run an HR function, you likely encounter this challenge on a regular basis: It is often the managers and department heads who make decisions that impact the results of key programs, such as retention and recruitment. These are busy people and too often they rely on intuition in the decision-making process — or they default to the simplest solution.

'This week I connected with a wonderful person who shared something that I just had to plug here. You know I’m a fan of certification and the benefits it can bring to your career. But once that certification is done you have that teensy, minor detail of getting 60 credit hours in order to recertify every three years. Truth be told, many of us scramble at the last minute to get them in (or just to collect the information if we already attended enough events–goodness we can be so disor
'Puzzled by the gradual slump in your company’s growth rate and talent level? It’s time to sit up and take notice of the depth of talent shortage, and act fast! The global market is abuzz with exciting job opportunities for young, smart, and talented people. You may have to change your conventional methods of hiring and focus of offbeat ideas to pool some of the smartest candidates into a superb team.
'Guillaume Dumas, a 28-year-old Canadian, made headlines recently when he announced that he had obtained an Ivy League education for free by sneaking in to classes at prestigious universities. His story — coupled with the skyrocketing costs of a college education — raised serious doubts about the value of a diploma. With tuition costs rising and more than a trillion dollars of student debt in America, alternate routes to achieving a top-tier education are increasingly attractive.
'Now that the holidays are well behind us and we’ve recovered from party season, I want to talk about human resources and employee parties. In many organizations, human resources is responsible for planning company parties. And many human resources professionals view planning parties as a degrading part of their job. Let me offer a different point of view on this subject.
Speaker: Amie Phillips Pablo, VP, Corporate Compliance & Privacy Officer at Novo Nordisk
In today’s complex healthcare environment, navigating third-party relationships has become even more challenging—whether it’s vendor relationships, employee activities, or patient-facing interactions. Left unmanaged, these conflicts can compromise trust, regulatory compliance, and even organizational reputation. So, how can healthcare teams stay ahead?
'You’ve decided you need a better mobile application experience , have your employee branding and job ads where you want them, and have a good social media recruiting and sourcing strategy. Now it’s time to build your site and make sure you’re ready to process mobile applications. If you want to attract mobile candidates, your site needs to work well.
'It can feel like preparing for a trip up Mount Everest. Along with gaining buy-in from people at all levels, turning your HR function into a well-oiled fact-based decision-making machine will require you to attain both some new hard and soft skills. And yet, research supports that it is well worth the effort. In recent years it has become common knowledge that proactively using data to make fact-based decisions is key: “Our experience has found that data-driven, analytical HR departments are mo
'I’ve made it pretty clear that I’m a nerd of many facets. Recently I listened to an episode of Freakonomics on behavioral science and really enjoyed it, so I listened to it all over again, took notes, and created lessons for you guys from them since it was just that good. Enjoy! We need to make it safe to have conversations others won’t naturally have.
'by Lynette Silva. Recognize This! – Our legacy is in our own hands. Someday, you will leave your current organization. You may retire. You may move. You may choose to continue your career elsewhere. Regardless of the reason you leave, your time in your current organization will be remembered by others. How will they remember you? Personally, I would hope I would be remembered as a helpful and appreciative colleague.

'Everyone from management gurus to millennials seems to agree: creating a strong, coherent culture is important to a company's success. Culture—not to be confused with perks like an office kegerator or catered lunches—is the largely invisible force that guides workplace behavior and decision-making for all employees. The trick, no matter what type of culture company leaders strive to create, is to make it an everyday part of doing business.
'This is one of those situations that might not come up regularly, but it raises a lot of questions about how to handle mistakes. The company I work for is closing. Each employee is being given a severance package of 1 week for every year worked. I started June 2010. When I was told that I would receive 2.5 weeks of severance, I questioned it and was told my hire date was listed as July 2012.
'There’s really no other way to say it: if you’re not adapting to mobile, you’re falling behind. Phones and tablets are taking over, and if you’re still looking for candidates the old-fashioned way, candidates are going to gloss over your job ads or, even worse, never see them at all. With 72% of candidates looking at career sites on their phone, you’d think companies would wise up and deliver career sites that take advantage of smartphones.
'Innovation is all around us, yet it’s not always so easy to uncover. Organizations have the opportunity every day to promote a culture of recognition and inspire innovation from employees. Appreciating employees is an everyday thing here at A chievers, so in honor of Employee Appreciation Week 2015, we thought we’d share some of our favorite links on innovation to inspire recognition—and innovation—today!

'Employee communications are dominated by email. According to a recent survey, up to 28% of our time is spent creating, reading, and replying to emails at work. In the average workweek that’s about 11 hours of time that you won’t get back, and we do that every single week. There’s something else I’d like you to consider trying this week: video.
'This week we''re in Oakland, California for. HR West , the West Coast’s premiere conference for HR professionals. With world-renowned keynote speakers and more than 80 concurrent sessions, we''re looking forward to a few days of learning and networking opportunities. There are five sessions in particular that have piqued our interest: HR and the Bottom Line.
'“Big Data” and “video” are among the buzziest of buzzwords in HR technology — and for good reason. The rules of recruitment are changing, leaving hiring managers to meet candidates on their terms. Increasingly, job seekers want to be seen and heard on mobile, social or video rather than as faceless facts listed on résumés.
'One of the most debated subjects in human resources these days is whether or not to tell employees they’re a part of the succession plan. There are certainly pros and cons to consider. The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) recently ran a point/counterpoint on the subject. It’s an interesting read and you can check it out here. It’s no secret that I happen to be in the “yes, you should tell employees they’re a part of the succession plan” camp.

'Do middle managers define your organization’s success? Your HR pro might think so. In fact, HR rates middle managers as the most critical level of management. 48% of HR executives rank mid-level managers as the role that needs to be the most up to speed, while only 25% rank senior-level managers as the most important. Why the emphasis on middle management?

What do you think will result when you encourage them to collaborate in new ways? Appreciating employees is an everyday thing here at A chievers, so in honor of Employee Appreciation Week 2015, we thought we’d share some of our favorite links on collaboration to inspire recognition—and collaboration—today!
'Recently I read The Front Line Leader by Chris Van Gorder while I was on a flight. Usually when I’m flying I take something fun/entertaining to keep my attention, but I needed to knock down my review pile so I grabbed this one. I’m so glad I did. I read it from cover to cover and made dozens of notes as I did. In short: this book is one of the best and most interesting that I have read in several years.
