A shorter more simple definition of employee engagement. It has taken me about 8 years and 10,000 hours to get to a definition of employee engagement that is both simple and elegant. I am discouraged with emotional and attitudinal surveys as I have become increasingly behavioral in my views of work and engagement. My definition puts engagement in the hands of each employee — I can choose to do this everyday while also being enabled and encouraged by my leaders, managers, and organization. Without work in the definition employee engagement is practically meaningless.

The Truth: It’s the Problem Definition. Yet arguably the most common error of sellers in consultative sales situations is – they blindly accept the customer’s definition of the problem. Worse yet, a fully worked out proposal grounded on a faulty problem definition becomes increasingly tenuous. The problem definition is the heart of the matter, for two reasons. Having gotten to a point of mutually confessed imperfection, the best problem definition begins.
