Be your best by being still

I was reminded of the importance of taking the time to “be still” recently when teaching a class on emotional intelligence and after reading an excerpt of Pico Iyer’s new book, The Art of Stillness: Adventures in Going Nowhere. In the class we discussed the concept of practicing mindfulness (quieting the mind of all its chatter) as a way to learn how to effectively manage our emotions. Oh my!
11 elements of great executive coaching
Linkage
NOVEMBER 25, 2014
I’ve identified 11 essential elements that every executive coach must have to be great (not just good). They’re built on a foundational belief that every coach (every employee and employer, really) has the responsibility to give every assignment that they take on their best effort because consistent best effort leads to great performance. And great performance leads to superior results. It is not the coach’s responsibility to pull your best effort out of you, necessarily. It is the coach’s responsibility to give his or her best effort. And it’s your responsibility to give your best effort….with

The secret to employee engagement (Part 1)
Linkage
DECEMBER 17, 2014
Some employees barely make it to work on time, mindlessly drift from task to task, do only what is required and show little enthusiasm for their work. Meanwhile, others are excited about coming to work and exude energy no matter the task. They go above and beyond minimum expectations and are always looking for ways to get the job done and satisfy customers. Experts use the term “employee engagement” to describe the continuum between these two types of employees, from disengaged to highly engaged. Engaged employees are committed to their organization and its bottom line. Know Your Employees.
What is the inclusion solution?
Linkage
DECEMBER 12, 2014
Inclusion means different things to different people, but for me inclusive leadership always boils down to mission and performance. Inclusion by definition means “involve as a factor” and “being part of the whole.” Inclusive leaders recognize that diverse input is critical to meeting mission objectives; when inclusive practices are combined with a focus on diversity—that is, including more underrepresented people—organizations increase the likelihood of significant performance gains because they now include insights from a multiplicity of perspectives, achieving a “whole” solution.
