Ask a Manager

I want to highlight two very different approaches by employers that were described in the comments on one of last week’s letters. Another was just told that her staff need to have workspaces that have dedicated offices and if they don’t have them in their current residences they are supp

A GOOD BOSS is better than a good company!

Brigette Hyacinth

My first boss was the best. I had a family emergency and before I could finish explaining to him the situation. He said, “And you are still standing here talking to me? Why aren’t you out the door yet? I’ll cover for you.” I smiled then went to my desk, took my belongings and left. Thereafter, he had my full commitment. Joseph was a good boss and I would have worked for him in any company.

A Bad Job With a Good Boss Is Better Than a Good Job With a Bad Boss

Brigette Hyacinth

My boss made a mistake on a project we were working on and instead of owning his mistake, he said it was my fault. I sat through that meeting feeling shocked and disappointed. Although this happened a couple of years ago. I remember the details quite well. When we left the meeting he told me, “You are a good sport.” I knew I needed to start planning my exit strategy.

At the beginning of the school year, one of my siblings shared the absolutely brilliant idea his children’s school had: Have the kids get up and run around the classroom every 14 minutes so that no one sat next to anyone for 15 minutes. If You Can’t Trust Your Employees to Work Flexibly, Why Hire Them in the First Place?

Brigette Hyacinth

Trust is the foundation of any successful relationship, whether professionally or personally and when it’s broken, it is extremely hard to repair. I once had a supervisor I couldn’t even send an email without her approving it first. She was so inflexible that it was overbearing. It was very frustrating and I didn’t trust her. When employees feel they can’t trust their boss, they feel unsafe, like no one has their back, and then spend more energy on survival than performing at their job.

Why You Got 99 (%) Problems in your Organization

Robin Schooling

If there’s one aspect of organizational dynamics that chaps my hide it’s the elitism that naturally surfaces due to the structural settings inherent in corporate hierarchies. In our capitalist power-network we have several specific classes: the business-owning class, the self-employed and small-business owners, and the working-class. We can also certainly argue that there is another class consisting of highly trained professionals (physicians, lawyers, etc.) who, by virtue of intellect or specia
