During the Cold War, government employees being gay was considered by the US Senate to be a threat to national security (insert eyeroll here) due to their alleged susceptibility to be blackmailed by enemies at risk of having their sexuality revealed. This policy remained in effect until 2011, when President Barack Obama repealed it.
